Appalachian Mountains ⛰

:bookmark: ITT I am documenting my adventures in the Appalachian Mountains. This thread is intended to be an interactive travel vlog, where viewers can participate both in real-time and retroactively.

A Day Trip To Hanging Rock State Park

In this live stream, we are leaving the city for a day trip to the mountains. Hanging Rock is officially part of the Sauratown mountain range, I believe it is also considered one of the foothills of the Appalachians (source needed). A two hour drive, a two hour hike, and a two hour ride home made for a full day and a long video. I wanted to document the entire trip and, aside from a few technical issues, that objective was achieved.

I think this was the best performance I’ve gotten out of my Latitude 7230, Canon EOS R6 Mark II, and Zoom H8 as a combined unit thus far. In fact, the issues with camera connectivity seem to be completely resolved thanks to the external capture card by Elgato. That said, it was fairly inconvenient to carry all of that gear up a mountain. I will be looking to reduce that weight on future expeditions.

Driving from Raleigh to Boone

Unfortunately, I misconfigured the audio for this live stream so this one is video only. Also, the camera gimbal was not locked into place, so the camera is pointed at the ceiling for a while. Both minor issues that could be solved with a pre-stream checklist; otherwise, I am quite happy with how this stream went. I think the drive streaming format improves with each iteration.

I am currently on a week-long trip to Julian Price Campgrounds in the Appalachian Mountains. I will be working-from-home most days during the trip, but otherwise have planned some music, art, and video projects to keep me occupied during this trip. I will be live streaming several times throughout the week, and will post a summary video at the end.

Photography and a Trip to Jimmy John’s

These are some photographs I took while working at Grandview Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway yesterday. I enjoyed watching this storm arrive over the mountains as I finished up work for the day. I am considering different methods for sharing photography on my platform, but for now uploading images to Discourse and boosting the post on Mastodon seems to be a good starting point. Between these and the live streams, I should be able to share my adventures in near real-time. Speaking of works-in-progress, I am still not satisfied with my audio configuration on the ATEM Mini. At this rate I may switch to using the built-in microphone on the R6 Mark II. Even more disappointingly, KFC had no dark meat and Jimmy John’s gave me tuna!

Five Days of Car Camping in the Appalachian Mountains June 2026

I spent the last week sleeping in my car, visiting scenic overlooks, and exploring the towns of Boone and Blowing Rock in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. On this trip I encountered thunderstorms, wildlife, and many incredible views. Links to product reviews below:
