Vintage Story - Season I Megathread 🛖

:bookmark: ITT we are discussing Season I of Vintage Story on eom.dev. @eric will post recorded live streams here, and members are invited to share their own content from the server as well. Viewers not on the server whitelist are invited to share tips and comments alongside content from members.

About the Game

Vintage Story is an uncompromising wilderness survival sandbox game inspired by eldritch horror themes. Find yourself in a ruined world reclaimed by nature and permeated by unnerving temporal disturbances. Relive the advent of human civilization, or take your own path. [1]

Open source

While not fully open source like the other games hosted on eom.dev (see Gaming), Vintage Story’s lead developer, Tyron, has made much of the source code readable, and is committed to a high standard of business practices:

:balance_scale: Fair and Independent
No marketplace. No loot boxes. No microtransactions. No Season pass. No paid DLC. No hidden fees. No pay2win. No ads. No user data monetization. No software patents. No shareholders. No publisher. No NFTs. No BlockChain. No 3rd party interests. No Games-as-a-Service. No empty promises.

:heart_hands: Handmade
Vintage Story is powered by our own cross-platform game engine. This allows us to tailor the engine exactly to our needs while still keeping hardware requirements low. We are 100% Indie.

:family: Social
We pay careful attention to foster a friendly and supportive community. Come visit us on the official forum, Discord chat server, wiki and mod database. Multiplayer anti-grief mechanics out of the box. You can get in direct contact with the developers of the game.

:bulb: Open
You can customize your game experience in infinite ways. Built from the ground up with modding in mind - we use our own mod api to add new game content. Half of the game is under a readable source license. We built our own mod database, modelling and animation tools and made them open source. [2]

Our Server

Our goal is simply to build a village and survive together - likely in poverty. Farming, crafting, and trading will be central to our gameplay. The horrors will be challenging, so adventuring will take preparation and teamwork!

Seasons

Season I implies a Season II. A new season means that we start over in a newly generated game world. This may be done for a number of reasons, but generally should be based on player consensus. There is no set duration for Season I.

Mods

Season I will be on a vanilla server (no mods). Mods may be discussed in the thread, but they are unlikely to be implemented until a future season.

S1:E1 | The Cradle of Civilization

In this first live stream from the Vintage Story server, I am exploring the world for the first time and establishing a base of operations. Having never played the game before, it was a fairly difficult start with several deaths and long nights underground. We have immediate problems with lack of food, hostile creatures, and a general lack-of-knowledge about the game. Even so, I set up a small cob house on top of a hill that will hopefully soon be the epicenter of a thriving village.

S1:E2 | Settling In

Today I am picking back up with setting the foundations of our Vintage Story village. In this episode I expand the cob hut, forage for food, and explore the landscape of this world. At present I am still the only player on the server and I am still just getting things started and exploring the features of this game. I see a lot of potential for us to develop a digital village in this game, but it will take several more sessions and potentially several server seasons to fully realize that vision.

I have watched some VS videos and it seems like a more ‘grown up’ version of Luanti. It definitely has a lot of involvement to it and things grow slowly in comparison. This is one where everyone shares the main building to start whilst getting things established.

I would be using the blocks from the ruins to build a home first I think.
On a side note, check which mods would help with gameplay.

S1:E2 | The Ruins

It has been several weeks since I last visited the Vintage Story server, and I am still just trying to scrape by in this world. Most of this episode is spent foraging for food, and I was set back by a few deaths along the way; however, I discovered a ruin towards the end of the stream and decided to move my base of operations to this new location. Though I am still just learning the game and am making little progress, I am feeling a little more comfortable with the game at this point. Also, I have scheduled live streams from this server to be on Saturdays at 13:30 UTC for the next few weeks and am looking for people to join me in game! Feel free to reach out if you are interested in participating.

S1:E4 | A New Home

Today I am starting to develop the fortress we discovered in the previous episode. I want to preserve the original architecture, and I have limited materials to work with, so for now all I’ve been able to do is add some cob to create an enclosed space out of the main tower. With just these minimal efforts, the shelter has actually become quite comfortable - much better than the original base. I also began collecting and planting berry bushes around the fort, and I will probably need to begin some more serious gardening in the next episode.

S1:E5 | Kubernetes Drama

What started as a gaming stream quickly turned into a debugging session as an update to my Vintage Story client caused incompatibility with the deployed server version. Attempting to update the server to restore compatibility, Kubernetes created a new PVC for the deployment that caused a new world to be generated. Fortunately, the previous PVC remains archived and can be recovered; however, I found myself intrigued by what I saw in the new map. While I intend to update the Ansible role to not create new PVCs for each deployment, I am curious if anyone has a preference for one of these worlds over the other. I have been the only one on the server so far, so a reset if fine with me. Given that it is technically easier (since I would have to do nothing at this point), I am inclined to stick with the new world absent objections.

So today we are starting fresh in a new Vintage Story world! I died a lot, but we have found several interesting landmarks right away: one ruins and two trader caravans. I explore the new map, begin construction on a starter home, and die to starvation multiple times.

S1:E6 | Building a Starter Home

Today I am working on converting the ruins we discovered last session into a basic starter home. The existing structure does a lot of the work for me, and with very little effort I was able to set up a quaint yet spacious home from which to begin expanding. Next episode I will need to focus on farming and hunting, as starvation and wildlife have been a persistent problem in both of the Vintage Story worlds I have explored so far.

S1:E7 | Bear Hunt

Welcome back to the starvation simulator! Things actually went much smoother this round as I discover a few new locations and (finally) a reasonable supply of food. We are still hand-to-mouth at this stage, but progress is being made and my deaths are becoming marginally less frequent. I even tried my hand at some hunting towards the end of the session.

S1:E8 | Hunting Raccoons, Foxes, and Wolves

Ever since our tussle with the bear, I have been wanting to invest more into hunting as a food source in this Vintage Story world. Things start bold as I tangle with a few wolves (most of whom got the better of me). I had a little more luck with smaller game, and with only a few more kills I should be able to craft some armor that will allow me to tackle larger predators.

Also, shoutout to @Jay42 and @LogalDeveloper for joining in the chat - thanks for being there! :turkey: :+1:

S1:E9 | A House of Mud to Keep the Wolves Out

Today I improve the main structure of my starter house by adding a roof and also hunt some wolves using the skills I have been exploring in the past few episodes. Progress is steady, and it seems like we are finally getting to a point where basic survival is no longer such a constant struggle. There is a lot in this game I have not even begun to explore, but feeling comfortable with a few core mechanics has made the experience much more enjoyable.

If I didn’t know better I’d say you are a glutton for punishment. :smirk:

It is a cool game, but I don’t think I can really commit to it enough to learn the mechanics and make progress. As I am thinking about what I want to do on this platform in 2026, I think the starvation simulations are out (looking at you, DayZ). I’ll keep the thread open and the server running for a while in case anyone takes interest or I change my mind, but for now I think I’m taking a break from this game.
