Mastodon is now available on eom.dev! For those who are unfamiliar, Mastodon is a decentralized social network similar to Twitter.
Please note that this instance is experimental. Users may experience technical issues, which should be reported here.
Content
The newsfeed on a Mastodon instance will be created from your contributions and those of accounts you follow. You can find accounts to follow by browsing other Mastodon instances as well as our own.
Global Community
Unlike Discourse, Mastodon will allow you to communicate with users who are unaffiliated with eom.dev.
Integration with Discourse
Both Mastodon and Discourse utilize the ActivityPub protocol, and can therefore interact in a number of ways. The most basic example of this is simply following a federated actor for a Discourse category with your Mastodon account; however, more complex interactions, such as replying to posts and account synchronization are possible.
How to Connect
Use SSO with Google to create an account with eom.dev. If you already have an account on another instance, feel free to follow me or use hashtag #eomdev in a post.
Quick update: I have created an ActivityPub actors for the Luanti category and to link my personal accounts on Discourse and Mastodon. My goal is to create the following workflow for live streams:
Begin streaming to Owncast with OBS
Owncast will make a post on ActivityPub advertising the stream
I boost this post with my Mastodon account
Recorded live stream is uploaded to MinIO and linked on Discourse
Discourse publishes the post on ActivityPub
I boost this second post with my Mastodon Account
The Luanti actor is configured to ingest responses, so Mastodon users should be able to participate in the discussion without necessarily having an account on our Discourse instance.
If you have a Mastodon account you can link it to Discourse in the ActivityPub section of your profile settings. Doing so will associate replies from your Mastodon account with your account here on Discourse.
